about the watch
In the vast world of watchmaking, one thing is beyond doubt: the most famous, most sought-after and most timeless diving watch is the Rolex Submariner. The steel Submariner Date is a true icon in the history of Rolex, and this vintage iteration is no exception. The second version of the 16800, as presented here, is fitted with the "wgs" dial and is the first submariner without painted index. It offers a perfect mix of vintage design and feel, while applying resistance-enhancing technologies that would be perpetuated on later models. This makes it one of Rolex's most sought-after 5-digit references.
This specific piece, with its steel case and bracelet, and matt black dial with applied white gold hour markers, embodies all the iconic features of the neo-vintage Submariner. The dial is immaculate, and its applied tritium hour-markers have acquired a light beige patina. Furthermore, the dial shows a beautiful satin-like patina on its black surface, that some collectors may call "frozen". The hands are also original and, like the hour-markers, have not been relumed. The bezel is still in superb condition, as is the rest of the watch. For a timepiece dating back to around 1985, it is in superb condition. The case and bracelet still have plenty of material and sharp edges, demonstrating the great care that has gone into this watch over the years.
The 16800 is a grail for any vintage Rolex enthusiast, as it represents the end of a period in watchmaking history that closed a bygone but still much-loved era. Renowned for its versatility and durability, this watch is a real gem for any collector or enthusiast.
The watch is in amazing condition. The case, bracelet and bezel have sharp angles and a lot of material, proving how well it was taken care of.
The Oyster bracelet is in great condition and has no stretch. It is the original one.
The watch is sold with it's original box, papers and many accessories such as the old achor and the original green tag. It is a rare and very complete set.
The movement is a caliber 3035, which runs perfectly well.
