about the watch
Initially designed for caving, the Rolex Explorer II has developed over the years into one of the brand's most uncommon and special watches.
Although still too under-appreciated, the Explorer II is an aesthetic and historical bombshell.
Also known as the "Polar" when configured with a white dial, it is one of only two so-called Rolex “toolwatches” to offer a white dial option (alongside the Daytona). As is often the case with Rolex's neo-vintage watches, the reference 16570 perfectly blends vintage aesthetics with modern strength and technology. Whether for its bracelet, its GMT function or its particularly legible white dial, the Polar is an extremely interesting timepiece in terms of both utility and "value for money".
This particular piece is probably our favorite configuration of the 16570. Its pristine white dial contrasts well with the steel case and bezel, the latter giving the Polar a pure toolwatch look. The red GMT hand adds vivacity to this relatively discreet timepiece. Interestingly, the watch sports the so-called "Swiss Only" dial, meaning that only "Swiss" can be read at 6 o'clock. This dial writing can only be found on A and U series, which represents a rather short production period (about one and a half year). The dial, case and bracelet have all been extremely well preserved, as the photos show. This watch is just waiting for the person who can make this time capsule their own, and enjoy one of the most pleasant and simple watches to wear on a daily basis.
The watch has been extremely well preserved, retaining sharp edges and a case that has plenty of material. The buckle and bracelet are also in excellent condition. The green caseback sticker is still well visible.
The bracelet is the original one, reference 78790 with 501H endlinks, and has no stretch.
The watch comes with its original box, outter-box, warranty paper, two booklets (Explorer and Oyster), warranty translation, calendar, green and red tags, as well as the green leather cardholder. This is a true "full set".
The movement is the original caliber 3185, which runs perfectly well.
