Chronograph tri-compax, ref. VD712, circa 1960s

A Minerva tri-compax chronograph from the 1960s, powered by the legendary Valjoux 72 calibre: one of the most admired column-wheel movements in the history of watchmaking, which was also used in Rolex Daytonas, Heuer Carreras and Breitling Navitimers of the same era. The silver-coloured dial with three sub-dials retains a harmonious patina. The whole is housed in a steel case with a screw-down caseback.

about the watch

Founded in 1858 by brothers Charles and Hyppolite Robert in Villeret, Minerva established itself at the start of the 20th century as one of the most respected manufacturers in Swiss watchmaking, distinguishing itself in 1908 by producing its own chronograph movements and sports counters. As the official timekeeper for the skiing events at the 1936 Winter Olympics, the brand built its reputation on the precision and robustness of its calibres.

This tri-compax chronograph, reference VD712, produced in the 1960s, perfectly illustrates this expertise. The round steel case, with a screw-down caseback, houses the Valjoux 72 calibre, a hand-wound column-wheel movement considered by many collectors to be one of the most accomplished ever designed. It is the same calibre that powers some of the most sought-after pieces on the vintage market, notably certain Daytona references. The silver-coloured dial, featuring three sub-dials (a 30-minute counter at 3 o’clock, a small seconds sub-dial at 6 o’clock, and an hour counter at 9 o’clock), displays an even patina that attests to its authenticity. The case back is engraved with ‘Water & Shock Resistant’ and ‘Non Magnetic’, confirming that it was produced for civilian rather than military use.

This timepiece stands out for its excellent condition, its elegant proportions characteristic of 1960s chronographs, and the proven reliability of the Valjoux 72. This makes it an essential piece for any seasoned collector or enthusiast looking to enter the world of vintage watches, and at a price that remains affordable.

The case is in excellent condition, sporting a few minor marks, but no major bumps or scratches.

The bracelet is new.

The watch is sold alone, without box or papers. We provide a Veritas travelling pouch.

The movement is the original caliber Valjoux 72, which runs perfectly well.
